Collect the good stuff.

Want a simple, heartwarming way to boost your mood and create a little magic in your daily life? Try starting a joy jar.

It’s exactly what it sounds like: a jar (or any type of container) that you fill with notes about things that bring you joy, gratitude or a smile. And over time, it becomes a personalized happiness time capsule you can open whenever you need a pick-me-up.

Whether it’s a big win or a tiny moment of delight, capturing it in your joy jar helps you focus on the good and build a habit of thankfulness that boosts your well-being.

Here’s how to make your own:

Step 1: Pick your jar (or box, or cup, or pencil case …)

Choose a container that makes you happy to look at. It could be a mason jar, a colourful mug, a decorated shoebox or anything else that suits your vibe.

Tip: Want to make it extra fun? Decorate it! Add stickers, doodles or a label like “Joy Jar,” “Little Wins,” or “Happy Things.”

Step 2: Get a pen and some paper

Cut up a few pieces of paper or grab a stack of sticky notes — whatever you’ll enjoy writing on. Keep them nearby so it’s easy to jot things down in the moment.

Optional: Use different colours for different types of joy (e.g., yellow for funny moments, pink for kind gestures, green for personal wins).

Step 3: Start adding moments of joy

Every day (or a few times a week), write down something that made you feel good. It can be as simple as “great cup of coffee” or as big as “got the job!”

Examples:

  • A compliment someone gave you
  • A cozy evening at home
  • A goal you reached
  • A laugh-out-loud moment
  • A sunset that made you pause

Step 4: Make it a habit

Try to add to your joy jar regularly. Set a reminder, make it part of your evening wind-down or pair it with a daily habit like brushing your teeth or journaling.

Bonus: Invite your family or friends to join in and add their own joyful notes!

Step 5: Open it up and reflect

Once the jar is full — or anytime you’re feeling a little blah — open it up and read a few of your notes. Instant mood boost! You’ll be surprised how many beautiful little moments you’ve collected.

Why it works

Practising gratitude helps train your brain to notice and appreciate the good. With a joy jar, you get to see that goodness stack up, one happy note at a time.

So what’s the first joyful moment you’ll add to your jar today?
