A simple habit for everyday reflection

The Rose, Bud, Thorn exercise is a fun, daily practice that can help you savour the good stuff, identify cool opportunities and acknowledge the challenges — all in under five minutes.

It’s often used in classrooms, at staff meetings and even around the dinner table. But it works just as well as a solo wellness exercise. Think of it as a mini mental health check that brings a little more clarity (and gratitude) to your day.

Here’s how it works:

Step 1: Rose – Salute something positive

Your Rose is a highlight, win or something that made you feel good today. Big or small, it’s the part of your day you’re grateful for or proud of.

Examples:

  • “I had a great cup of coffee this morning.”
  • “I finished that project I was stressed about.”
  • “I laughed so hard during lunch with a friend.”

Tip: Roses don’t have to be huge. A nice breeze, a good song or even wearing comfy socks counts!

Step 2: Bud – Identify something you’re looking forward to

Your Bud is something on the horizon that you’re excited about or curious to explore. It’s your “growing” part — what’s next, what has potential or what brings hope.

Examples:

  • “I’m looking forward to the weekend.”
  • “I’m starting a new book tonight.”
  • “I have an idea for a fun side project I want to try.”

Tip: Buds help shift your focus to the future in a hopeful way, which is great for motivation and mental balance.

Step 3: Thorn – Acknowledge something challenging

Your Thorn is a challenge, frustration or something that didn’t go so well. It’s a chance to acknowledge what’s hard — without judgement — so you don’t bottle it up.

Examples:

  • “I felt really distracted during work today.”
  • “I had an awkward conversation with my roommate.”
  • “I didn’t sleep well last night and it threw off my whole day.”

Tip: Thorns aren’t about complaining — they’re about being honest. Even naming one can reduce its weight.

When to use Rose, Bud, Thorn

  • As a daily journaling prompt
  • At the dinner table with family or roommates
  • In team meetings or classrooms
  • During a mindful moment before bed
  • When you just need to process your day

This simple trio of reflections helps you balance gratitude, growth and honesty — all in one go. Plus, it’s a great conversation starter and a way to stay present and positive, even when life gets messy.

What’s your Rose, Bud and Thorn for today?

Bonus: Add a Pruner

Take the exercise a step further by adding a “Pruner” to the mix. Your Pruner is an action you can take to help address a Thorn. Or something you can do to grow your Rose even bigger or help your Bud bloom.

Examples:

  • “I’m going to splurge on better coffee beans” (making a Rose even rosier)
  • “I’m going to make my famous guacamole this weekend” (helping a Bud bloom)
  • “I’m going to find a quieter workspace at the office” (addressing a prickly Thorn)
