Focus better, stress less.

Struggling to stay focused? Keep drifting into social media spirals or snack breaks every 10 minutes? Say hello to the Pomodoro Technique: a well-established time-management method that helps you actually get things done (without burning out).

Named after a tomato-shaped kitchen timer (yes, really), this technique breaks your work into short, focussed sprints with built-in breaks. The result? More productivity, less mental fatigue and a solid sense of accomplishment by the end of the day.

Hereโ€™s how to get started:

Step 1: Pick a task

Choose one task to work on. Not three. Not five. Just one. Whether itโ€™s writing, studying, cleaning or planning, the Pomodoro Technique works best when you zero in on a single focus.

Tip: If the task feels huge, break it into smaller chunks so each one feels doable.

Step 2: Set a timer for 25 minutes

Start a timer for 25 minutes. This is your first โ€œPomodoro.โ€ During this time, commit to working only on that one task. No texts, no emails, no โ€œjust one quick thing.โ€ Laser focus.

Tools you can use include a phone timer, Pomodoro apps (like Focus Keeper or TomatoTimer) or a good ol’ fashioned kitchen timer.

Step 3: Work until the timer dings

Stay focused for the full 25 minutes. If you get distracted, gently bring yourself back. No need to be perfect.

Step 4: Take a five-minute break

Congrats, youโ€™ve completed one Pomodoro! Now take a break. Stretch, grab water, look out the window, dance around โ€” anything that gives your brain a breather.

Important: Step away from your task during this time. Let your mind rest.

Step 5: Repeat four times, then take a longer break

After four Pomodoros (about two hours of work with breaks), take a longer break of 15 to 30 minutes. This helps reset your focus and prevents burnout.

Use this time to:

  • Take a walk
  • Eat something tasty
  • Relax or reset for the next round

Why it works

The Pomodoro Technique keeps you from falling into the trap of marathon work sessions. It adds urgency to your work, rewards you with breaks and builds momentum with each focussed session.

Itโ€™s simple. Itโ€™s flexible. And it turns even the most overwhelming to-do list into a series of bite-sized wins.

So grab a timer, pick your task, and get ready to power through โ€” 25 minutes at a time.
