Redefine success, one intention at a time.
We live in a world that loves checkboxes. To-do lists. Productivity apps. Achievement trackers. Everywhere you turn, there’s another way to measure how much you’ve gotten done. And make no mistake: getting stuff done feels great.
But life isn’t only about what you accomplish — it’s also about how you show up while you’re doing it. As Buddha once said, “It is better to travel well, than to arrive.”
A to-be list shifts the focus from doing to being. It gives you a chance to ask, “What kind of person do I want to be today?” And that small question can change your entire day.
Step 1: Start your morning with intention
Before diving headfirst into emails or errands, pause for just one minute. Take a breath and ask yourself: How do I want to be today? Calm? Bold? Kind? Focused? It’s about setting a tone — like choosing your outfit for the day, but for your mindset.
Step 2: Pick a few “to-be” words or phrases
Jot down a few words or short phrases that capture the energy, attitude or values you want to embody. For example:
- Patient with myself and others
- Open to feedback
- Joyful, even in the small stuff
- More curious, less judgmental
Don’t worry about choosing the “right” ones. Just go with what feels good or meaningful in the moment.
Step 3: Put it somewhere you’ll see it
Write your to-be list on a sticky note, in your planner on your bathroom mirror. Let it act as a helpful nudge or reminder of the kind of person you’re trying to be, especially when the day starts to pull you in different directions.
Step 4: Reflect — no pressure required
At the end of the day, take a few seconds to reflect. Did you remember your to-be list during a tough meeting or while stuck in traffic? You’re not aiming for perfection. Even if you didn’t totally nail it, just being intentional about your energy and attitude is a win.
In a world that constantly asks, “What did you get done today?”, your to-be list lets you answer a deeper question: “Who were you while doing it?” It’s a gentle way to bring more meaning to your day — and to remind yourself that success isn’t just about ticking boxes.
It’s about becoming the person you want to be, one intention at a time.
