Take the reins.
It’s easy to get lost in worries about things beyond your control — like what others think, unpredictable events or how the universe decides to throw curveballs your way. But turning your attention to what you can control can help you let go of all that stress.
When you focus on the things within your control, you regain a sense of empowerment and calm. Instead of feeling overwhelmed, you start to see that you have the ability to make choices that positively impact your life. This shift can reduce anxiety, improve your well-being and put you back into the driver’s seat.
Step 1. Recognize what’s out of your hands
The first step is acknowledging what you can’t control. These are things like other people’s actions, the weather or the outcome of certain situations. Acknowledge them, but don’t dwell on them. This helps free up mental space and reduces unnecessary stress.
Step 2. Identify what you can control
Now, shift your attention to the things you can control. These could be:
- Your reactions and mindset
- The way you spend your time
- Your self-care habits (sleep, eating, exercise)
- How you approach a challenge
The goal is to focus on the things that are directly within your grasp, not on the things that make you feel powerless.
Step 3. Break it down into actionable steps
Once you’ve identified the things you can control, make a list of small, actionable steps you can take. For example, if you’re stressed about work, focus on what you can do today. That could be organizing your desk. Or prioritizing tasks. Or setting healthy boundaries. You might not control everything, but you control how you show up.
Step 4. Reframe your thoughts
When you start feeling anxious about something beyond your control, pause and ask yourself: What part of this can I control? Maybe it’s the way you respond to the situation or the small actions you can take to create a sense of calm. Reframe your thoughts to focus on what you can change in the moment.
Step 5. Celebrate small wins
Each time you take action on something you can control, celebrate it! Whether it’s taking a break, making a healthy choice or staying calm during a stressful situation, these small wins add up to big shifts in how you feel.
Bonus tips
- Practise mindfulness to stay focused on the present moment.
- Practise the “control circle” technique: draw a circle and list what’s in your control inside, and everything else outside.
- Be gentle with yourself. Remember: it’s about progress, not perfection!
When you focus on what you can control, you’ll feel more grounded, confident and in charge of your own life. So let go of the rest and focus on the things that truly matter. You’ve got this!
