Badge of Awesome Communities invites you to share your favourite things to see and do in cool destinations around the world. We caught up with the folks from Dunfield Theatre Cambridge — one of our featured attractions from the Waterloo Region area — to learn about what they have to offer and what they think makes their community so awesome.
What makes Drayton Entertainment awesome?
Drayton Entertainment: The question should be What doesn’t make Drayton Entertainment awesome? First and foremost, we present professional world class theatre – musicals, comedies, and family favourites, like Disney’s Beauty and the Beast! Secondly, our artists have impressive resumes with many working on Broadway, and other well-known stages across North America. Lastly, all our shows are available at an affordable price point – only $46 for adults and $25 for kids!
The Dunfield Theatre Cambridge is located in historic downtown Galt, right near the 401. This new state-of-the-art theatre opened in 2013 and operates year round. In addition to a 500-seat theatre auditorium, the building also houses the construction, costume and props shops as well as the administration for Drayton Entertainment. The theatre is surrounded by quaint shops and restaurants. In 2017, the season includes big musicals like Joseph and the Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat and Rock of Ages as well as some fun comedies like, One for the Pot.
If you travel up the highway, you will find two more of our theatres – the St. Jacobs Country Playhouse and the Schoolhouse Theatre in St. Jacobs are both located near the famous St. Jacobs Farmers’ Market and historic St. Jacobs Village. If you drive a little further into the country, you’ll find the venue that started it all – the Drayton Festival Theatre. It was the very first theatre in our journey to becoming a seven-stage theatre company that puts on over 800 performances a season! The 1902 renovated Opera House and former Town Hall entertains audiences during the summer months with shows like the hit Canadian comedy Harvest and the blockbuster musical, Million Dollar Quartet.
Even though our other three theatres aren’t in Waterloo Region, we think they are pretty awesome too! You can see the same top quality productions at the Huron Country Playhouse and Playhouse II in Grand Bend and King’s Wharf Theatre in Penetanguishene. They are both near the water and are perfect destinations for day trippers, vacationers and locals in the summer season.
Drayton Entertainment staff are always working to ensure every member of our audience has a wonderful experience, from the moment you walk into our theatres until you leave. World Class theatre right in your backyard. Not many communities can say that!
What makes the Waterloo Region awesome?
Drayton Entertainment: Where to begin?! Yeah sure, Waterloo Region is a booming tech hub, but we also have a thriving arts community and manufacturing roots. Downtown Galt is a Hollywood favourite for television shows and movies (most recently, the hit show The Handmaid’s Tale was shot there). Kitchener is booming with multiculturalism and getting ready for a little mode of transportation known as the LRT. Maybe you’ve heard of it? (Of course you have!). Silicon Valley North….I mean, Waterloo, keeps growing, even bringing our Prime Minister to town on multiple occasions. The surrounding towns and villages are home to famous markets, beautiful parks, scenic trails, famous eateries – and, of course – terrific professional theatre! Oh! Don’t forget about Oktoberfest! Oh! The Grand River! Oh! I could go on and on! What are you waiting for?! Come and visit us!
